Adults with ADHD are up to six times more likely than are their neurotypical peers to have Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), which is characterized by extreme sadness, loss of interest, and mania. Not only is MDD more prevalent in adults with ADHD, but the disorder can have an outsized effect on women and girls who have both conditions. MDD is associated with an earlier age of onset, a longer duration, more severe impairment, a higher rate of suicidality, and a greater likelihood of requiring psychiatric hospitalization in girls with ADHD.

When treating depression in patients with ADHD, it is critical for clinicians to recognize a patient’s feelings of worthlessness, which, as one study points out, were directly related to suicidal thoughts and planning in adolescents.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About MDD and other mood disorders that are highly comorbid with ADHD, including bipolar disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and emotional dysregulation
  • About symptoms of mood disorders and how they co-exist with ADHD
  • About new and alternative treatments for MDD, including medication, neurofeedback, and neuromodulation therapy, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and esketamine treatments
  • Which therapies are in clinical trials that may hold promise
  • About strategies to help people with depression and mood disorders

Pregnancy is magical and excruciating. Exciting and overwhelming. Demanding and the calm before the storm.

This is true for most people who experience pregnancy, but it’s doubly true for those with ADHD, roughly 96% of whom cease taking stimulant medication while pregnant and nursing. On top of that, the new and unrelenting demands of caring for an infant, while experiencing changing hormone levels and disrupted sleep, can amplify ADHD symptoms and bring a new level of difficulty to daily functioning.

For women who discontinued ADHD medication use during pregnancy, in particular, coping with raw emotions, a new routine, and a new baby may feel next to impossible and lead to comorbid anxiety and depression. It is important for clinicians treating perinatal women with ADHD to consider the benefits and risk of stimulant use in this critical time of transition.

In this webinar, women, partners, and professionals will learn:

  • About the intersection of ADHD symptoms and neurobiology in perinatal women during and after pregnancy
  • About the risk analysis of stimulant use versus discontinuation in pregnancy and postpartum
  • How to anticipate the demands of early motherhood and risk for depression and anxiety in women with ADHD
  • About the impact of hormones on ADHD throughout the lifespan, and the interplay with medication

Trichotillomania (i.e. hair pulling) and dermatillomania (i.e. skin picking) disorders—also known as body-focused repetitive behaviors, or BFRBs—are seldom discussed openly. Though BFRBs are relatively common, people struggling with them feel ashamed and misunderstood. Behavioral treatment for BFRBs is available and effective. Learn how they are treated and how parents can support their children.

In this webinar, caregivers will learn:

  • What defines a BFRB: How they are diagnosed and what to know about these misunderstood childhood disorders
  • About the current functional model for understanding why people pull their hair and/or pick their skin
  • About ways parents can effectively and lovingly support their child with a BFRB
  • The current best practice treatment approaches for BFRBs

“ADHD Then and Now: How Our Understanding Has Evolved” [Video Replay & Podcast #447] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/history-of-adhd-diagnosis-treatment-research/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/history-of-adhd-diagnosis-treatment-research/#respond Mon, 13 Feb 2023 22:10:46 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=322516 Episode Description

Over its lifetime, ADHD has been a lightning rod for controversy and for heated debates over its increasing diagnostic rates, its pharmacological treatment, and its links to factors like screen use and social media. At the same time, important advances have been made. We now understand ADHD better than ever at a neurological level, have made research-informed modifications to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD and comorbid mental health disorders, and are better understanding sex differences in ADHD symptom presentation.

Today’s ADHD treatment options generally rely on tried-and-true combinations of behavioral parent training, medication, school-based consultation, and social and organizational skills training. Some new treatment options — diet, exercise, neurofeedback, and digital training programs — have inspired hope for breakthrough interventions but have been largely unable to deliver on their promise. However, as the stigma surrounding ADHD decreases, and as we increase our understanding across the lifespan, we should feel great optimism for what the next 25 years could hold for children, teens, and adults with ADHD.

In this webinar, David Anderson, Ph.D., will highlight the setbacks and successes in advancing the understanding of ADHD over the past 25 years, and will discuss the ways in which ADHD advocates can work toward accelerating positive trends in this field for the next quarter century.

In this webinar, parent, caregivers, and professionals will learn:

  • Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD over the past 25 years
  • How media and societal narratives have helped and hindered the understanding of ADHD
  • Where the science of ADHD and our understanding of ADHD across the lifespan stands now
  • Practical steps to promote a brighter future for children, teens, and adults with ADHD

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation, an unstable self-image, and interpersonal problems — all symptoms associated with ADHD as well. In fact, studies show that 20 to 40 percent of people with BPD also have ADHD. Because the two disorders share overlapping symptoms, clinicians may misdiagnose one for the other and inadvertently prescribe an ineffective treatment plan.

This webinar will focus on understanding BPD, differentiating the BPD symptoms that mimic ADHD, and understanding ADHD-specific risk factors of developing BPD. Treatment recommendations will also be reviewed.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How to identify the symptoms of BPD
  • How to differentiate between BPD and ADHD symptoms
  • How to identify ADHD-specific risk factors for developing BPD
  • About treatment recommendations for comorbid ADHD and BPD

“Emotion Regulation Difficulties in Youth: ADHD Irritability vs. DMDD vs. Bipolar Disorder” [Video Replay & Podcast #435] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/dmdd-bipolar-adhd-irritability-youth-mood-disorders/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/dmdd-bipolar-adhd-irritability-youth-mood-disorders/#respond Fri, 21 Oct 2022 20:38:38 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=315689 Episode Description

Irritability, moodiness, temper tantrums, or other mood states commonly occur alongside ADHD in youth, but sometimes emotion regulation difficulties (ERD) indicate something more. Caregivers observing frequent mood issues may worry that their child has a mood-related pediatric psychiatric disorder, like DMDD or bipolar disorder, in addition to ADHD. And in fact, youth with ADHD are at elevated risk, compared to unaffected youth, for developing a mood disorder at some point in their lives.

That said, irritability is a non-specific emotional state that can be observed in healthy youth and those who have ADHD or other behavioral challenges, in addition to youth with diagnosed mood disorders. Understanding the significance of irritability in a child with ADHD, consequently, can be quite challenging, even for seasoned clinicians. So it is no surprise that many parents of youth with ADHD and ERD, feel anxious and uncertain about their child’s diagnoses.

In this webinar, caregivers will learn:

  • How ERD in youth with ADHD may constitute a diagnostic subtype of the broader ADHD population
  • How to view the typical features of pediatric psychiatry disorders associated with irritability in a way that can help caregivers better differentiate the likely source of emotional disturbance they are observing in their child
  • Important next steps they can take to help their children experiencing irritability, and other ERD, both from a parenting intervention perspective and through seeking out appropriate clinical expertise

ADHD may be hereditary, but emerging research suggests environmental factors and experiences can affect a child’s development and behavior in ways that may last a lifetime —or may be reversible. We know that exposure to stress, adversity, and trauma as well as many other environmental exposures, affect how genes are influenced, or expressed. We also know that these environmental factors can affect the developing brain and make learning and behavior challenges associated with ADHD worse during the early and middle years of childhood.

These findings provide clues to maximize children’s health from before birth into childhood. Among the clues: certain lifestyle changes can slow or reverse the harm caused by stress and other toxic influences — and help to restore healthy development in children with ADHD.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How genetics influence ADHD
  • About the environmental risk factors related to brain development and ADHD
  • About the behavioral and learning challenges in children with ADHD that result from adverse environmental conditions
  • How emerging research into environmental influences on a child’s brain development may inform prevention or new treatment
  • How exercise, stress management, and lifestyle changes can benefit a child’s development and attention

It’s tempting to characterize ADHD as a collection of disparate symptoms that can be compartmentalized, strategized, and treated to mitigate their impact on school or work. Think impulsiveness, distractibility, time blindness, poor organization skills, social blunders, and so on. But ADHD is more than the sum of its parts. It is a whole-life, whole-body experience, a 24/7 companion that impacts every aspect of our being.

In honor of ADHD Awareness Month, this webinar will explore how ADHD affects our relationships, our work, our mental health, and our self-image — literally every facet of our selves.

“Maladaptive Daydreaming vs. ADHD: Important Similarities and Distinctive Differences” [Video Replay & Podcast #412] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/maladaptive-daydreaming-adhd-mind-wandering/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/maladaptive-daydreaming-adhd-mind-wandering/#respond Thu, 02 Jun 2022 15:57:31 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=302315 Episode Description

Maladaptive daydreaming, sometimes called daydreaming disorder, describes the experience of becoming immersed in elaborate fantasies that lure an individual away from their day-to-day responsibilities for hours at a time. The daydreaming is so vivid and interesting that it becomes addictive. Often, real-life relationships and obligations are neglected as a result.

Maladaptive daydreaming is different from the mind-wandering typically experienced by people with ADHD, and it is rapidly gaining recognition in the scientific arena. Maladaptive dreaming is not yet a psychiatric diagnosis.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How maladaptive daydreaming is defined and experienced
  • About the link between maladaptive daydreaming and ADHD
  • About the differences between maladaptive daydreaming and ADHD and mind-wandering
  • How mental health clinicians can assess maladaptive daydreaming and treatment implications

“Integrated Care for Children with ADHD: How to Form a Cross-Functional Care Team” [Video Replay & Podcast #411] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/integrated-collaborative-care-adhd-children-teens/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/integrated-collaborative-care-adhd-children-teens/#respond Mon, 23 May 2022 19:20:22 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=301849 Episode Description

Rarely do primary care providers, behavioral health professionals, and school officials involved in the diagnosis and treatment of children and teens with ADHD and co-existing conditions collaborate on the care of their shared patients. Yet evidence shows that outcomes improve when they do. In an integrated care model, behavioral care managers — often trained as social workers and pediatric therapists — are embedded in primary care practices where they work with families, school teams, and medical providers to accurately diagnose children and ensure they receive the effective care and resources they need to succeed.

In this webinar, we will introduce integrated behavioral health as an effective model for the diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with ADHD and its comorbidities. We’ll discuss why this model enables us to make early diagnoses more effectively and we’ll share the positive outcomes we have seen over the years for children and adolescents in our practice.

In this webinar, you will learn…

  • How integrated care models work
  • The benefits of an integrated behavioral health care approach to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD
  • How parents and behavioral care managers set up systems with school officials to monitor students’ academic performance
  • How providers and behavioral health care professionals can work together to implement integrated care services in their practices

“When Dyslexia and ADHD Overlap: Symptoms, Misconceptions, and Interventions” [Video Replay & Podcast #403] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/dyslexia-adhd-overlap-symptoms-interventions/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/dyslexia-adhd-overlap-symptoms-interventions/#respond Thu, 21 Apr 2022 18:44:41 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=298495 Episode Description

ADHD and dyslexia are separate conditions that often co-occur. In fact, it is estimated that about half of people with ADHD also have a learning disorder, the most common of which is dyslexia.

ADHD is a neurological condition characterized by inattention, distractibility, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability characterized by difficulties with accurate and fluent word recognition, spelling, and reading decoding. Although the two share some common traits, they are distinctly different. Proper assessment to identify and differentiate both conditions is critical.

In this webinar, we will discuss both ADHD and dyslexia, symptoms they may have in common, and ways in which they differ. We will also discuss treatment implications if both dyslexia and ADHD are present.

This webinar will also cover the following:

  • Key signs and traits of ADHD and dyslexia
  • Differences between ADHD and dyslexia
  • How children with both conditions differ from those with just one or the other
  • Effective interventions for children with co-occurring ADHD and dyslexia

“The Right Questions to Ask Before, During, and After an ADHD Diagnosis” [Video Replay & Podcast #421] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-evaluation-diagnosis-treatment-questions/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-evaluation-diagnosis-treatment-questions/#comments Mon, 18 Apr 2022 13:57:29 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=298141 Episode Description

My kid might have ADHD? What does that even mean? Do they really need an evaluation? Who can evaluate and diagnose ADHD? Do we need a specialist? Everyone seems to have a different answer to these questions.

Turns out one of the most confusing aspects of having a child with ADHD is the fact that many types of professionals may be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. Because getting an ADHD evaluation can be both time-intensive and expensive, it’s important to be educated about what options exist, what to expect during the process, and what questions to ask the professionals.

In this webinar, Dr. Norrine Russell, founder of Russell Coaching for Students and creator of the Connected Coaching for Complex Students model, will provide parents with the key questions they need to ask before, during, and after an ADHD assessment and diagnosis.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • Why it’s critically important for parents to become educated about best practices for diagnosing and treating childhood ADHD
  • The main reasons for confusion about who to see and when to see them in the case of concern about ADHD
  • The list of questions you should have prepared for the first appointment for the evaluation
  • The list of questions you should take with you to the feedback session after the evaluation
  • What to know about follow-up appointments with each member of your child’s ADHD team and what questions to ask every three months, every six months, and annually
